MSH Board Member Background InfoAndrea Tebo, HT (ASCP) I began my medical career at the age of 16, working as a medical assistant in a local physician’s office while going to high school. During this time, I was trained to draw blood and help with front and back office procedures. Upon graduation from high school, I began working for an internal medicine physician, running both of her offices while taking evening classes at Anne Arundel Community College. In October 1989, I began working evenings as a phlebotomist at Harbor Hospital Center, and became a certified phlebotomist with the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians. I moved around from shift to shift before ending up as a laboratory assistant. I performed phlebotomy for the Blood Bank in the morning, and Cytoprep for the Cytology Department in the afternoon. This is where I became exposed to Histology. When there were no specimens to be prepped in Cytology, I would go over to the Histology Department and watch the Pathology Assistant perform gross. This was so fascinating to me. A part-time histology position opened in 1992, and the histology supervisor, knowing my interests, offered it to me. She trained me to embed, stain and cut frozen sections and eventually I began cutting autopsy blocks. At the same time I also worked at Anne Arundel Medical Center every other weekend performing phlebotomy. Over the next 4 years, I became more efficient and productive in histology. The supervisor at Anne Arundel Medical Center offered a position as Histotechnician II to me, on the condition that I would take and pass the registry within one year of hire. I worked diligently, and passed the HT in September of 1997. I became the lead tech at the hospital in 1999 and continued moving up the administrative ladder. I became the Histopathology Supervisor in April of 2005, from where I am now continuing 14+ years at Anne Arundel Medical Center. I am a member of NSH and MSH, with this being my first term on the MSH BOD. |
