University of Maryland
Introduction to Neuromuscular Pathology

Objectives:

  1. Understand the basic reasons that nerve and muscle biopsies are performed.
  2. Recognize the common sites for nerve and muscle biopsies.
  3. Review basic muscle and nerve histology.
  4. Understand the components of the motor unit.
  5. Review basics of how to process nerve and muscle biopsies.
  6. Recognize some stains that are commonly used for evaluating nerve and muscle biopsies.
We will review basic nerve and muscle histology, what the motor unit is, and why most muscle and nerve biopsies are performed. We will also review how to handle and process nerve and muscle biopsies as well as review basic stains that are used in evaluating nerve and muscle biopsies. Examples of nerve and muscle disorders will be shown to illustrate how histology and histochemistry are used in evaluating the specimens.
